Hey there! Here are a few things to keep in mind about reproductive health while you’re away at college. With the landscape around birth control and abortion shifting, it’s good to be in the know so you feel prepared and empowered:
Scope Out Your Options: Every state has its own laws around birth control and abortion, so get the lowdown on what’s available near campus. Knowing your options now means you’re ready if you ever need them or if a friend asks you for help.
Have Extra Birth Control: If you’re on birth control, keep a backup supply if you can, that means make sure you’ve always got an extra month pack on hand—some states have made getting birth control tricky, and you don’t want to get caught without your prescription.
Check Out Campus Health Resources: Your school’s health center may offer free or affordable birth control, STI testing, or counseling. And if they don’t, they can probably point you to a local clinic that does.
Emergency Contraception (Plan B): It’s still available over the counter, but some places have extra rules around it. You can also buy it online. (Don’t know what plan b is? Learn more about it here) Consider keeping a dose in your dorm or apartment—better to have it and not need it than the other way around!
Know the Abortion Laws in Your Area: Some states have restrictions on abortion access, so it helps to know what’s allowed and who can help if you need to go out of state. Check out sites like I Need an A for info on the nearest options.
Protect Your Digital Privacy: Be aware that period-tracking apps and other health info might not always be private. Some people are opting to use these tools less or track manually just to play it safe.
Get Connected: Lots of schools have groups focused on reproductive health and rights. Joining one can keep you updated and connected to support if you need it.
Talk It Out: Reproductive stuff doesn’t have to be super private if you’re comfortable sharing. Chat with friends, roommates, or a counselor if you need support or advice. If your parents are supportive, thats a great resource for you too!
Empower Yourself: The more you know about your health and rights, the better! Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to navigating these sometimes confusing times.
Take care of yourself, stay informed, and know you’re not alone—you’ve got options, support, and the power to stay on top of your reproductive health.
