procedural abortion
A procedural abortion (or surgical abortion) is a medical procedure to terminate a pregnancy. It is performed by a healthcare provider in a clinical setting.
Aspiration (or Vacuum) Abortion - often referred to as a D&C by the general public
This is the most common method used for first-trimester abortions (up to about 13-14 weeks of pregnancy).
During the procedure, a healthcare provider dilates the cervix and uses gentle suction to remove the pregnancy tissue from the uterus.
The procedure usually takes about 5-10 minutes and may be done with local anesthesia, mild sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's preference and the provider's practice.
THE BENEFIT
When you leave the clinic, it’s done
Can be done safely through later weeks in the pregnancy
THE DOWNSIDE
Cost can be a barrier
Difficult to access in states with an abortion ban
Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) Abortion
D&E is a common method used for abortions after 13-14 weeks of pregnancy
During the procedure, a healthcare provider dilates the cervix and uses a combination of suction and surgical instruments to gently remove pregnancy tissue from the uterus. Often this is done over two days.
A D&E can be performed with local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia, based on the patient's needs and the provider's recommendations and availability.
