How do we support people needing abortion care in other states where abortion is currently illegal or difficult to access?
Supporting people in states where abortion is being restricted or banned can take many forms, and it’s all about being there for each other. Local Abortion Funds have been doing the work for decades and are the soul of supporting abortion care and people needing abortions. These organizations provide information as well as financial assistance for people who need financial help with things like travel, accommodation, childcare coverage, and medical costs when they seek care locally or in another state.
You can also support telehealth options, which provide abortion pills through telemedicine, allowing women to access care from the safety of their own homes. Raising awareness and keeping the conversation about abortion rights going in your community or on social media is another important step. Offering emotional support—whether by being there to listen, helping someone find counseling, or just offering a word of encouragement—can be incredibly helpful.
If you can, volunteering your time with local or national organizations that help with abortion access or spreading resources about where to get care makes a big difference. Lastly, backing legal efforts and donating to groups that fight for reproductive rights in court ensures that there’s support for those who are challenging these laws.
Even if you’re in a state where abortion is more accessible, being a supportive ally can have a real impact. Every bit of help counts!
